Red & Cream Quilt... 1st big quilt I machine quilted :)

I finished machine quilting this lovely red and cream quilt on Friday.... it is truly one of my favorite quilts ever. I've never quilted this closely together on so large a project; this is also the largest quilt I've done on my home sewing machine yet.

The quilt top, before quilting, isn't it lovely with all the light shining through the colors??
I absolutely am thrilled with how this quilt turned out

"The Path Less Traveled Through the Corn Fields", approx. 60" square
It is loosely based on a pattern called "Times Square", by Pam Lintott & Nicky Lintott.

UPDATE: Not available anymore, sold and in a private collection in the Atlanta area.

Etsy Treasury Time!

I found the cutest little crocheted purse, and thought of putting this together:

Latest Fall Trends for Your Little Fashionista

Also... I know it won't make it to the front page because I featured my own item on there, but I would dearly love for some sweet little girl to get to enjoy the little dress I had so much fun making with my vintage pattern :)

And I have a RN job interview tomorrow... we need the income but I don't plan to stop quilting if I get it! That's for sure...  I've let too much stand in the way of doing what I love to do the most, and I'll quilt around a job again happily-at least it would mean I'd have the money to invest in materials, which I'm quickly running out of (money AND materials!), lol!

Hope everyone is having a wonderful day... drop me a comment if you're reading this, it makes my day :)

Quilting Away here in SC!

I've been busily putting all the finishing touches (labels, machine quilting my last of my "Campbell Ridge" wallhangings, the hand quilting on another lap quilt) on my next batch of quilts for The Dark Corner.

And, trying to catch up on computer stuff and networking... so good to have internet again! I am resolving to try to post something, no matter how short, each day.

For today's enjoyment, here is a photo of this darling little girl's dress, made of 1930's reproduction fabrics, an upcycled girls shirt, and the sweetest little 1930's kitty cat applique design:

Isn't she cute? I love how the little hand embroidered details and decorative machine stitching really accented the dress... this is one of my favorites of children's clothes I've made.

Hope everyone is having a wonderful day, leave me a comment if you feel like it-they make me smile :)

I'm rebelling with B.Michelle Pippin! Makes me proud of a very little thing I did today... stopped in at a local artisan center that I live 10 minutes from, to see about consigning my quilts there. And they want me to teach a quilting class too!! Because I swallowed my FEAR, my "I don't have time", all those excuses...
Also, the most wonderful opportunity for my quilting and sewing business has taken place because I finally rebelled against the "what if" fear and emailed the sales and marketing director of the first legal Moonshine distillery in South Carolina; I'd read a newspaper article and there was a short mention in there of locally made crafts, and I immediately thought "MY QUILTS!!".  Now, the place is opening next week, and is on the best street in town, with foot traffic of an estimated 1200 people a day walking by... and they are exclusively carrying my quilts!!

So, go read her article, and keep at it, you never know what direction your business can go in if you don't let FEAR sabotage it!!!

One of my quilts was featured in a Treasury!

My "Coffee, Cream and a Country Morning" quilt was featured in a wonderful treasury, here: "A Chill is in the Air" by my dear fellow Etsy member, PrimroseTranquility! And what an appropriate name... it was chilly here in SC when I got up this morning, around 57 degrees!

I'm very busy putting the finishing touches (labels, etc) onto several small quilts to take to The Dark Corner, which is opening NEXT WEEK!!!

My goal today is to finish machine quilting #4 out of 4 Limited Edition "Campbell Ridge" wallhangings. There are 4, each very individual in fabrics and quilting designs. Design and pattern are my original work, based on an antique quilt block pattern:

Have a wonderful day... I FINALLY have internet again, after about a month of having to go to the library to use it! I don't know if anyone even noticed I was gone, but I'm happy to have this outlet to journal in!

Sewing away...

I've been SO busy sewing I haven't had time to post lately... I'm machine quilting the inaugural "Moonshine Memories" quilt for the Dark Corner Distillery, which I blogged about a week or so ago.
Also, working on some new ones; hoping against hope

Thoughts....

This is not another quilt. This post is not more photos of my latest home redecorating project.

Here are some thoughts I had today, in church of all places. Our pastor was talking about how God doesn't open doors for us until we have the character to use the gifts He gave us and keep at it in that room that He opens the door to...

I'm stoked about this!!

I am so super excited... I have a (once-in-a-lifetime opening for any artist) opportunity to sell my work through a new retail/historical storefront ON MAIN STREET IN DOWNTOWN GREENVILLE!!!! This place celebrates the local history of our Upstate SC area, and they are going to carry exclusively my line of quilts made exclusively for them, of course along with several other local, traditional artists.

This one is a stunner!! My latest quilt...

I started with this absolutely gorgeous "Hanemai" fabric, by Yuko Hasegawa for RJR Fabrics... I fell in love with the details, the gracefulness of the birds, the depths and shades of the reds-I knew this HAD to be a quilt!

Here is the fabric laid out, with a cream border...

Isn't it beautiful???

Photos of the "new" bedroom!!

Walking in...

Finishing up painting master bedroom, woo hoo!!

Have to get back to it... all is finished painting and ready to start putting back together.

Before... a blah room, with WAY too much clutter... only good thing is the dresser. I knew this quilt wouldn't go at ALL in the new decor so it got moved to another room:

All the clutter out, dusted, and prepping for painting:

About to paint!!

Prepping my bedroom for painting, so excited; my lovely, wonderful sister bought the 2 gallons of paint in trade for my help with her remodeling project, woo-hoo!!

Are you ready??

Ready to learn how to quilt?? I'm starting a beginner's quilt class on Monday, July 18th! It will be a 6 week course, held at my home in Duncan, from July 18-August 22, and will run from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. on Monday evenings.

The cost for course is $120 plus fabric and supplies, and will include lessons on buying fabric and supplies, rotary cutting, machine piecing, pressing for accuracy, planning and attaching borders, and different quilting techniques.

Finally found inspiration to make a rug!!

I’ve been searching for a larger, inexpensive but pretty & colorful rug for the guest room, and haven’t found one I liked yet.
The painted ones intimidate me… I know fabric a whole lot better than paint, lol! So this  fabric-covered vinyl rug is perfect… now to get a scrap of vinyl and the perfect fabric!

Curves of Green quilt

This is a very modern, different quilt... I started it in December and just finished the binding today.

It's a completely different quilt than others I've made, the curved pieces are actually appliqued on instead of pieced. This is where I was playing with the layout of the colors:

How about quilting classes??

I'm seriously thinking about starting a beginner quilting class... I've had at least 10 ladies in the past several months ask me about teaching quilting, or tell me they wish they knew how, but don't even know how to use their sewing machine.
So... I came to ask you, my wonderful blog readers, what do you think? If there was a beginner quilting class in your area, would you take it?

Also, for a 6-week course of 1 night per week, with lessons on rotary cutting, machine piecing, pressing seams, simple borders, etc, how much would you be willing to pay? And would you, in this theoretical exercise, rather pay extra for me to include the fabrics so you don't have to shop for them?

If you have ANY suggestions or helpful comments, please let me know, and THANK YOU!!

Design Portfolio: Teen Girl's Room in Black and Lime Green

This is a room I designed for a teenage girl who absolutely LOVES green, and also likes black.
What is to be her new bedroom is currently a crowded computer room/guest room/random storage room (think of a HUGE corner computer desk from the '90's, several file cabinets, several gigantic veneer particle board cabinets, a guest bed, and a closet so full of stuff that it attacks when opened), and she is moving to be with her dad in only a few weeks. And that boring gray sponge-look wallpaper that makes me think of concrete; and COMPLETELY does not match in tone to the oak wood trim & doors in the room and the roll-down shade the first decorator made? The homeowner/father absolutely does not want the trim painted nor the window shade changed, since he loves wood and paid a lot of money for window treatments and wallpapering job from his previous interior designer.

The first step was getting rid of the ENORMOUS computer desk that took up half the 10' x 10' room, which meant finding him a new desk and making room in another part of the customer's house for his home office. The trundle bed that was being used as a guest bed went back under the other bedroom's bunk bed, and 2 big cabinets & the file cabinets found new homes elsewhere in the house. I personally cleaned 7 years of dirt/dust out of the carpet... who knew designing starts with, literally, a CLEAN slate? Ha ha!

First purchase was these Urban Outfitters curtains that I ordered, and I can't say how much I adore them... the yellow birds tie in the warmth of the natural wood and the roll-up shade, and the blue birds bring in the cooler gray/blue tones of the wallpaper! Already a transformation just with the curtains!

So now I finally had a clean, blank room to work with. I measured and laid it out on paper, and measured some more, and then searched for a computer desk that would fit into the space next to the closet door, which is the only spot where I could put one and leave room for her dresser and bed and some actual empty floor space. Finally, I found this perfect desk at Office Depot (it also comes in white)... it's the Shore Mini Solutions Computer Hutch in Antique Black (still offered).  It is black, which the teen girl will like, and has an antiqued finish, which isn't so dense as plain black and ties in with the wooden trim and the honey oak dresser a little better than flat black would have.

The dresser is from the set in the other bedroom, and if it was up to me, I would paint it to match the computer desk or at the bare minimum, put cute door knobs on it to make it blend with the rest of the room better. I've seen some really cute ones on blogs with a variety of different door knobs, and I'm eying the ones at Hobby Lobby, but the homeowner does not want the dresser altered at all. The little cute lamp is from Ross, and what a lucky find, see how perfectly it matches the pattern on the curtain fabric? The quilt is one I made (under Rose Tree Originals). The beautiful little painted "E" for her name is a custom piece by my very dear, talented friend Jacqueline of Peachbutter Arts Studio.

The new bed was the only other piece of furniture purchased, and here it is in all it's glory in WHITE (teenage girl will think a white bed looks like a little girl's bed)... I'm taking my redoing furniture to an entire new level because I PAINTED this brand new bed!!

The new bed now looks old, after about 10 layers of primer, paints, glazes, and Johnson's Paste Wax (available at Home Depot):

The details on it are lovely, and it's sturdy and well constructed, just a little too... white!
I did a weathered dark gray finish, with a little metallic pewter accent on the details, aged, distressed... I saw furniture with similar finishes in the Restoration Hardware catalog.

And I saved the best for last, the custom bed quilt that I made, and with it, bringing in touches of complimentary colors to the lime green she loves.

Challenging room design, but fun, and she ended up loving it!

Bedroom Curtains

Good morning! I've been looking for weeks for curtains for the master bedroom. Yes, I know it's going totally against decorating advice, but I picked out the paint color first and I've been trying to find something that went with it and the wallpaper already there (that I can't remove, as I don't own the house). As the Valspar website says aptly, this color seems to express "The shadows that appear at dusk, mysterious yet calming, and the tints of twilight on a clear summer night" Here's the paint color, "Summer Night" by Valspar, CI-138, and a magazine photo of a slightly more purple paint, but just to help you envision (unknown source; unfortunately didn't save source along with photo!):
So after buying about 6 different panels and deciding they were all too BLAH, I started looking for fabric. I went to the Viking quilt shop, and picked out this beautiful fabric (main fabric is "Close to My Heart" by Laundry Basket Quilts for Moda); and then here are the curtain rods (stock photo from Lowe's; rods are from there).

Hopefully, I will be able to finally get these sewn today, I'm excited!

UPDATE:

I have 2 out of the 4 panel fronts sewn... all they will need after this is to be lined, hemmed & rod pocket put in.

I had the wonderful idea to make triangle shapes instead of just a straight flat flange, and of course, as a quilter, I immediately thought "prairie points!!!". I pulled out my trusty Fons & Porter Quilter's Complete Guide....
 and followed the instructions:

And then had to piece my scraps together of my vintage fabric (made by Sears in the 1960's as a historical reproduction fabric modeled after the Art Nouveau period) for the flange:

I then cut 1 3/4" strips across the stripes; folded in half & in half again to give it more body; pinned, and basted onto the edge of the cream fabric (I ended up lining the cream fabric with same-size pieces of an old sheet to give it more structure; this is the part that will be hung from the rod)

I then pinned the prairie points on, aligning raw edges & making sure the X points where they met fell at exactly where the flange line is:

And I just couldn't wait to hang the rods to see what it will look like... I pinned it up (yes, over fabric, that's what I had pinned up to help keep the light out, lol!) to see what it would look like. You can see part of the dresser (the only piece of furniture in there I really love... the chair's comfy but will definitely need a slipcover!), and a different lamp... anyway, picture the walls painted that pretty Valspar Summer Night, and 2 of these hanging on curtain rods:

And another "before" photo from the other window in the room... this one is the original ugly plaid cornice plus fabric pinned on to insulate, since this room is in the Southwest corner; and one of the other fabrics I auditioned... it looked too close to the wallpaper design!

I'm seriously thinking about using curtain clips instead of a rod pocket, like in these photos:

Fabrics:

Main floral is "Close to My Heart" by Laundry Basket Quilts for Moda Fabrics; Pattern # 42006
Cream tone-on-tone stripe is "Neutral Companions" by Anna Fishkin for Red Rooster Fabrics; DSN #19705
Blue-Gray small floral is "Harpers Ferry by Nancy Gere 1810-1890" by Windham Fabrics; Pattern # 27716
And greenish stripe used as accent flange is antique fabric supposedly dating from the 1960's; manufactured then by Sears as a reproduction of an 1800's-early 1900's fabric; it has "A Sears Vincent Price National Treasure" printed on the selvedges

All except the antique one were purchased from Viking Says Sew in Greenville, SC.

UPDATE II:

Here are finished curtains with Valspar's Summer Night paint:

‘A passion to help others’

‘A passion to help others’ I am so very proud of my little sister, and her heart for God's work is humbling and inspiring. She's the sister that I made my first Whimsical Rhapsody quilt for, which has been waiting here for her to come home. If we can raise enough money for her to (she's already used all the savings from working at Wendy's through high school to finance the mission trip), she'll be able to come home for a little while this summer and work, and then go back in the fall.
